What then does “one another” mean in Ephesians 5:21? It means “some to others,” not “everyone to everyone.” The meaning of hypotassō, which always indicates one-directional submission to an authority, prevents the sense “everyone to everyone” in this verse. And the following context (wives to husbands, children to parents, servants to masters) shows this understanding to be true. Therefore, it is not “mutual submission,” but submission to appropriate authorities, which Paul is commanding
